Embossing & Debossing

Debossing presses a logo into the material; embossing raises it. Both use a custom die, heat and pressure, and give a tactile mark without ink.

Debossing and embossing create a logo you can feel. A metal die made from your design is heated and pressed into the material: debossing pushes the logo down into the surface, while embossing raises it from behind. No ink is involved, so the mark takes on the colour and texture of the material itself. It is a quiet, elegant way to brand leather goods and stationery, and one of the most popular choices for executive gifts.

Where embossing and debossing work

The material has to hold a pressed shape. Good candidates include:

Debossing leather is the most common use: the logo sinks slightly into the surface and often darkens a little, producing a natural tone-on-tone effect.

Embossing logo vs debossing: pros and limits

Both techniques feel premium, are very durable and need no colour matching. They suit understated brand identities and items meant to be kept. Embossing a logo on leather or card gives a raised relief that catches the light; debossing is more practical for covers and accessories because the recessed mark is protected from wear.

Detail is limited by the die and the material: hairlines, tiny text and gradients do not press well, and soft or textured surfaces blur fine shapes. Since a die has to be made for each design, the setup is a one-off cost that becomes less significant over larger quantities. If you want colour inside the pressed logo, hot foil printing combines a die with metallic or coloured foil. On metal and wood, laser engraving gives a comparable premium look.

Preparing your logo for debossing

We need a one-colour vector file (AI, PDF, SVG or EPS) with text converted to outlines; shading and colour are ignored because the die works in a single depth. Keep the design bold and simple, with enough space between lines. We send a free digital proof showing size and placement, and the die is made only after your approval.
